Label Lover

Ok, hands up if you choose your wine for the evening based on font type, print colour and cutest indigenous creature on the wine label?

Really...? Huh, I didn’t realise you were that shallow…!

I have at least one good friend who would balk and suffocate himself violently at the thought of anyone picking a wine based on the label alone, but I must admit, some of these label designers certainly earn their crust. Gerri L Elder at WebUrbanist is showcasing ‘61 exceptionally creative wine labels’, some of which are functional, stylish or downright hysterical. My favs are below, but I’m sure there are other crackers in circulation…

Gotta admire the honesty of this one...

  1. £2.99 too cheap, £3.99 ok, £4.99 too expensive.

Is there actually more to wine that that?

  2. Apparently it makes for a higher class gutter to sleep in at the end of the evening... xx

  3. Ah, so that's what's keeping me in the gutter. Had wondered what the problem was. Thanks for the heads up.

  4. Mmmm ... I have a friend who tends to pick her wine on the 'prettiness' of the label and her husband is likely to pick his on the basis of the sort of labels above. As for me, you are right I would suffocate at the thought!! Having said that, Fairview Wines of South Africa, inventors of 'Goats do Roam', (a) actually do have goats roaming at the winery and (b) make some passable wines!

As for the £2.99, £3.99 and £4.99 comment above - well you know me!! ;)

  5. As Lord Henry (Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray) says: 'Only shallow people don't judge by appearances.'

All other factors being equal, a person will choose based on appearance. All other factors being unknown (which is often the case with wine--you have no idea what it tastes like until you've already bought the bottle), appearance will be the decisive factor.

Therein lies the essential necessity for image and branding.
