Pianist Lang Lang plays iPad at concert

Chinese pianist Lang Lang surprised concert-goers by whipping out an iPad to perform an encore of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Flight of the Bumblebee' at a San Francisco concert this week.

Lang Lang played the piece using the iPad app Magic Piano that had been preloaded onto an iPad sent to Lang Lang by developers Smule as thanks for being part of the inspiration behind the app. Ge Wang, co-founder of Smule, said he met with Lang Lang before the concert and played a few pieces on the app with him. "I’ve never seen the freestyle Magic Piano played like he did," said Wang, adding that Lang Lang "totally digs Magic Piano and the iPad."

Boy oh boy, we’ve come a long way since those little plastic Casio keyboards. But until an iPad can capture that authentic smell of old wood, I can store my keys, phone and other paraphernalia on it in the hallway and it is possible to drape yourself across it in a cocktail dress, I’ll be sticking to my creaky old piano thank you…

Appease the volcano!

Friends, travellers and holiday makers! What would you sacrifice/offer up to appease the Icelandic volcano? Current sacrificial suggestions include Justin Bieber, David Cameron, Windows Vista, Jedward and the man from the Go Compare adverts. Twitterers/Facebookers are attempting to appease the volcano by eating more Jaffa cakes, not using disabled toilets when desperate, switching from Costa to Starbucks etc etc. The possibilities are endless. Some offerings, however, are rather dependent upon on the sex of the volcano, i.e. the suggestion that appeasement can be achieved by chocolate and a Hermes Birkin bag if the volcano is female and a few car mags and an hour on a PS3 if found to be male…

See Twitter trending topic #appeasethevolcano or join Andrew Davies’ Facebook group Appease The Volcano to make your suggestion!

Standing Cat: And the Photoshopping begins…

So we’re all familiar with Standing Cat by now, right? Well, Internet nerds and Twitter geeks certainly are, but if you *have* a life then here’s the tall, furry fella in action below.

And sure enough, only a few days after the original Standing Cat video hit the Internet, the inevitable parodies and Photoshop chop jobs are hitting Youtube. Yes, yes, I know they’re daft, but Zorro Standing Cat and his Mariachi feline accompaniment just almost killed me…

Ok, I promise that the next blog post will be a little more high-brow…just a little, mind…

Lol@Jesus Christ: The Facebook Passion

Continuing with the religious theme from my last-but-one post (well, it *is* Easter I suppose and I *am* trying to convince everyone that it really says in The Gospel of Mark that those who do not buy their friends Easter eggs will burn forever in the fiery pit of hell…).

Some clever soul has created Jesus' Facebook Page complete with a photo album of ‘Jesus cuddling fluffy things’, comments by Dan Brown, the disciple James uploading photos from his Blackberry and Jesus sending a gift of A Big Ol’ Can of Whoop Ass to the Moneylenders amongst lots of other funny posts. It’s a little too serious for my liking, but since it is a parody of the Easter Passion story then a certain amount of sobriety is unavoidable. I’d like to see how other attempts at a day-to-day, run-of-the-mill FB page for JC would fare. Or how about God’s FB page? (God's twittering of creation was hysterically funny). So many possibilities!
